Today after returning from an unsucessful trip to see the GT Towhee in
Galax I thought I would check a few bodies of water for waterfowl,
inspired mainly by Mike Purdy's report yesterday. I stopped by Carvins
Cove first hoping to find the RN Grebe, but was unsucessful. I did see a
male and two female flyby Common Mergansers, a pair of RT Mergansers, a
pair of Hooded Mergansers, and a female Bufflehead. There was also an
immature Bald Eagle flying in and out of one of the coves.
Waterfall Lake (always be Murray's Pond to me...) had Bufflehead, a
Canvasback, GW Teal, RN Duck, Gadwall, and Mallards.
Greenfield had a nice assortment. Gadwall, GW Teal, RN Duck, a
Canvasback, a pair of Redhead, Bufflehead, two Coot, Black Duck and Mallards.
No Grebes anywhere.
The wind was brutal. Don't even want to know what the wind chill was.
