Rob Hilton once showed me a picture (can't remember the reference) of a
Woodcock in that same area (what is now Pentagon City Mall). I believe they
used to nest there too. I moved into this area in '87 - before the mall,
but never really had a chance to work those fields. They were probably in
worse shape than when you were working the area, Henry.
I actually have Woodcock on my yard list too - from a few years ago (the
bird that actually prompted me to keep a yard list). Flushed one from the
cover of day lilies and other stuff. Not sure which is the rarer bird for a
postage stamp yard in south Arlington. Some folks up the street once had an
American Bittern in a tree in their yard - wish I saw that one.

When I worked at the Pentagon some 30 years ago, Bobwhites were often heard
and seen in the empty tangles that became the Pentagon City Mall where the
Ritz Carlton and Nordstrom's is today.
