VA Birders,
On this bright sunny morning my wife, Lynda, and I (Roger Mayhorn) drove
over to the Breaks Interstate Park to find the first warbler of the season.
No warblers found, but we did find 5 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS. Two seemed to be
having some difficulty with their songs. Maybe they are first year birds and
haven't gotten it down yet. David Raines, also a Buchanan County Bird Club
member, found the first Blue-headed in the park on March 20th. This is a new
early record for the county.
Lynda and I found a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK on the nest about 30 feet up in the
fork of a large Beech Tree. The tree is right beside a bike trail in the
park, and we walked right past the tree, but the parent bird didn't seem to
pay us any attention. I didn't think there would be a problem since some
park employees just 50 or 60 yards away were using a chain saw to cut up a
tree that had fallen across the trail. If that noise didn't upset the hawk,
I didn't think that our walking by would even be noticed.
Some other notables we saw today were BROWN CREEPER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET,
and WINTER WREN.
David Raines also found our first TREE SWALLOW of the season today near the
Willowbrook Country Club. The bird was flying back and forth over the small
stream that marks the boundary between Buchanan and Dickenson Counties.
