I had a number of Bluebirds at the feeders today. They come almost every day
for the mealworms I put out, and for the hulled sunflower seeds. I don't
know this of course, but I like to think of them as the mom, dad and babies
that fledged from the box in my yard last summer.
If you love Bluebirds as much as I do, then you are welcome to become a
member of the Virginia Bluebird Society, and help monitor nest boxes on an
established bluebird trail. No experience is necessary. All you need is the
time to check the boxes, once or week, or once a month, depending on your
interest level. We have trails available all through out the Commonwealth of
Virginia. Feel free to contact me or one of the County Coordinators listed
on the VBS website: http://www.virginiabluebirds.org/index.html. ;
If you wish to start a bluebird trail, then VBS has funds and boxes
available to the public to start trails on public property. All we ask is
that you agree to monitor the boxes using our protocol and submit your data
to VBS at the end of the season. Submit a grant application ASAP. Funds can
also be used to refurbish existing trails on public property, if monitored
and we get the data.
Scouts can also receive grants to build boxes to become an Eagle Scout.
Monitoring boxes is a great way to have a lot fun, learn a lot about birds
and meet a lot of great people!
