I was fortunate enough to witness a Bluebird fledge from its nestbox this
morning!! I had never seen this before. The baby sat in the entrance hole
with her head sticking out and the parents calling from a nearby tree. After
a few minutes she made her first flight out of the box and up to a branch
where she was rewarded with a juicy worm. (My daughter Katie determined the
baby is a girl.)
This pair of bluebirds started nesting during the warm spell we had at the
end of March. Their first egg was on March 31. (Someone tell Roger.) The
steady diet of hulled sunflower seeds, meal worms and wax worms that I have
been feeding them all winter I'm sure helped. I have two other boxes near
the house that also have babies close to fledging. I'm guessing that these
birds also were feeding here at the house. On all of my trails that I
monitor or supervise, the bluebirds are just getting started. That is, they
are now completing nests and laying eggs.
Cheers,
Phil
