Hello, birders.
I had a wonderful morning at Blandy. Wonderful after the foggy start, anyway,
when I was actually able to see the birds. Raptors were on the move and
sparrows were abundant. I birded from the parking lot to the gazebo, as well
as part of the weedy field past the pavilion. A selection:
-both vulture sp., several each
-Sharp-shinned Hawk, 2 imm.
-R.t. Hawk, 6
-Killdeer, 6 or so, flying
-Gr. Yellowlegs, 1 flying. I think it took off from the wetlands near the
gazebo
-all woodpeckers except Hairy and R.h.
-E. Phoebe
-Tree Swallow, about 6. I also saw this species where Rte. 50 crosses the
Shenandoah River. At nearby Sky Meadows SP I don't think I've ever seen Tree
Swallow after mid or late July.
-Red-breasted Nuthatch, maybe 3
-both kinglets
-Am. Robin, about 3 doz.
-Gr. Catbird, 1, eating berries
-Cedar Waxwing, about 30
-warblers, Yel.-rumped (about 6) and 2 Palm (yellow)
-sparrows, Towhee (1), Chipping (6+), Field (2), Vesper (4), Savannah (1), Song
(12+), Swamp (6), White-throated (25), White-crowned (15), Junco (18+)
-Purple Finch, 4
