At about 6:30 this morning I discovered a Black-crowned Night-Heron on
College Lake in Lynchburg. This is an early date for a species that is rare
in the Lynchburg area. Robert Ferrell, Judy Wiegand and Gene Sattler were
able to stop by on their ways to work to see it. I suspect it will be gone
by nightfall.
There are also nine Blue-winged Teal on the lake; their numbers have grown
from the original pair that arrived over a week ago. And there have been
about a dozen Purple Finches at the feeders in our yard for nearly two weeks
(very unusual in town - House Finches are predominant at our feeders with
one or two single Purple Finches visits a year).
Please feel free to stop by and look for any of these from our yard
overlooking the lake. The night-heron was down near the bridge over
Lakeside Drive (at the far side of the lake to the left) roosting on a
branch just above a silt fence on the left side of the bridge.
