Dept. of Agriculture to take and hang up dead vultures as a scare tactic
per their discretion.<<<
I just have to laugh every time I read this. I can just imagine a vulture
coming up to the dead one and thinking:
"Oh, no! It's Charlie! What have they done to you, man?!?!? I **WARNED** you to
stay away form here, dude! Didn't I always say that eating all those windshield
wipers wasn't good for you?!? NOW look at you!"
either that or:
"Hey, great! Less competition!" or "Vulture al fresco! Mmm-mmm! Good eatin's!!"
I know. I have a twisted mind.

Subject: [va-bird] Black Vulture Update
Paul Mocko posted a link to the Richmond Times Dispatch by Rex Springston
regarding the vulture problem in the state and, more specifically, the black
vulture problem at the Dutch Gap boat landing. This, by the way, is not a
problem on the boardwalk or the birding trails.
The current program of scaring the vultures away with noise seems to be
working as I had not seen any until today. There were 14 hanging around today.
The damage they do to autos and boat has been an ongoing problem but it was
last summer that the plan was divised to trap and shoot them. As you might
expect, that got a lot of people fired up and Larry Lynch was able to get
Springston to write a front page article with a color picture. That led to
meetings and the current plan.
This is the plan and it seems to be working:
Here is an update on the Black Vulture program at Dutch Gap:
· Post temporary signage to notify patrons about what is going on.
· Set up the propane cannon near to the boat ramp parking lost and
set it for occasional firing (borrow the canon from Mike Likens)
· Dominion Resources to mount wind activated noise makers on the
transmission towers over the river...we may mount the propane cannons
here if the noisemakers are not yet available.
· Dept. of Agriculture staff to be present for the first couple of
days to carry out and advise on how to adjust the program as necessary.
· Dept. of Agriculture to take and hang up dead vultures as a
scare tactic per their discretion.
· Pyrotechnic scare program by Park & Recreation Staff, and boater
volunteers.
a. Early morning Point of Parks Park maintenance staff on overtime
on the way into work - with assistance from a volunteer boater to provide
access to Virginia Power towers and other areas adjacent to the river.
b. mid day - Mark Battista will fire occasional pyrotechnics as
required and will request volunteer boaters' assistance only as needed.
c. Evening (1 hour before sunset)
This is the most critical time to scare off the birds. Parks &
Recreation nighttime security staff will fire off pyrotechnics with the
assistance from volunteer boaters.
d. Noel Losen at 748-1129 will coordinate scheduling of staff and
volunteers.
He will contact Park's staff and volunteers (Wayne Andrews) to make
arrangements for personnel.
· All harassment programs are 7 days per week
· Discuss banding or individual bird identification to learn more
about the Black Vulture habits - through Richmond Audubon.
· Assess progress after 2-3 weeks
· Develop long-term harassment program based on experience
