Greetings to all:
This afternoon while looking for birds at Runt Powell's farm on Wolf Trap Road
in Halifax County I had a single Black Tern in breeding plumage to show up. It
was flying below the tree line and away from me when I first picked up on it
and first thought that it was a Common Nighthawk. Then it turned a little to
the right and I saw that it was a Black Tern. It flew over to a small pond and
flew back and forth about three times and even made two dives for fish before
it flew out of sight.
This will be my first record of a Black Tern in Halifax County other than those
seen at Staunton River State Park. It also is my earliest date as of 07/31
where the earliest was 08/03.
