Eight people participated in the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy's regular monthly
(every 4th Saturday) bird walk at the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental
Stewardship in northwestern Loudoun County this morning. The walk was led by
John Drummond. The highlights of the 64 bird species seen were 2 CERULEAN
WARBLERS (we had great views of one of them, a very fresh-looking male)and 2
very vocal GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS (the first of the year for most of us). Other
highlights, primarily because they were first of the year, were EASTERN
KINGBIRD, RED-EYED VIREO, 3 NORTHERN PARULAS, a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, an
AMERICAN REDSTART, an OVENBIRD, and 3 SCARLET TANAGERS. We had a total of four
vireo species, 12 Ruby-crowned Kinglets and at least 25 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers.
The latter were singing everywhere and frequently arguing over territory. We
didn't have a single hawk during the walk itself but had five species while
tallying near the Visitor Center. We walked in to Gordon Pond from Arnold Road.
