Displaying more enthusiasm than sense, I set off to Leesylvania this morning
in my Highlander and a light drizzle. Long before I got there it was
raining much harder so I went to Occoquan instead. To my surprise there
were a number of unoccupied cars in the parking lot some of which may well
have belonged to more intrepid birders than I. There was also a killdeer
checking out a puddle in the middle of the lot. Before I could park to look
around, the killdeer was joined by two lesser yellowlegs and a least
sandpiper. They didn't hang around long though. Apparently small
crustaceans don't inhabit asphalt parking lots.
By this time it was raining hard enough to seriously discourage birding on
foot so I decided to leave via the Wildlife Drive and bird from the car.
The highlights were a King Rail heard and seen at the marsh on Charlie Road
plus the three species of shorebirds in the parking lot. All the following
were heard and/or seen from the car along this (one mile?) stretch of road
and the parking lot.
