Hello all
This morning I decided to bird around the Elkhorn Lake area to find out what
birds are breeding in this mountain setting . Elkhorn Lake is in Augusta
County . To get there go Rt. 250 West as if you are going to Shenandoah
Mountain. You will see a sign telling you where to turn . Below is a list of
birds found today that are significant finds .
Great Blue Heron -- 1 Imm. near the North River Dam
Red -- shouldered Hawk -- 1 heard near Elkhorn Lake
Broad -- winged & Red -- tailed Hawk -- 1 each flying over N R Dam
E . Phoebe -- 7 found three nest sites
Great -- Crested Flycatcher -- 1 picking up nest material
Red -- eyed Vireo -- 19 -- 1 carrying food to a possible nest site
Carolina Chickadee -- 5
Black -- Capped Chickadee -- 1 near N R dam area
Titmouse -- several with one family group ( young begging for food )
Northern Parula --- 17 --- 1 Carrying food to possible nest site near Elkhorn
Lake **
Black -- throated Green -- 2 singing
Blackburnian Warbler -- 7 with one pair feeding recently fledged young near
Elkhorn Lake **
Pine Warbler -- 9 -- most at Elkhorn Lake **
Black & White -- 3
Worm -- eating -- 2
Ovenbird -- 7
Louisiana Waterhrush -- 2 one at Elkhorn & one near N R Dam carrying food to
possible nest site **
Kentucky Warbler -- 1 near N R Dam area
** means summer peak counts .
