Hi y'all,
4 biology and field natural history students and
I went hiking at Big Schloss on Great North
Mountain west of Woodstock VA this morning. A
spectacular view on a spectacular day. Nice fall
colors. Besides seeing a guy who drove here from
Michigan for the view, the ridge-top trail gave
us great looks of several migrants including:
dozens of ruby-crowned kinglets
5 golden-crowned kinglets
1 yellow-bellied sapsucker
about 15 blue-headed vireo
1 yellow-throated vireo
1 red-eyed vireo
1 cape may warbler
1 palm warbler
4 blackpoll warbler
2 bay-breasted warbler
1 black-throated green warbler
dozens of yellow-rumped warblers
about 10 white-throated sparrows
1 slate-colored junco
1 eastern towhee
We also found my first winter wren of the season,
2 ravens, several turkey vultures and a
red-tailed hawk.
Despite the great viewing conditions, we did not
see any hawk migration at this point or at the
Woodstock firetower on the next ridge to the
east, though we only stayed for 30-60 minutes at
each place.
