VA-Birders:
Gene Burreson and I have birded Beaverdam Park in Gloucester a good
number of times over the last few weeks and have recorded a nice variety of
migratory and resident species. An update is below, and interesting
sightings are separated at the tops of the list sections.
Highlights from today in the northern section of the park, despite the
cloudy and cold weather, included a singing male BLUE-WINGED Warbler (a
lifer for both of us) and at least two rather vocal and resplendent YELLOW
Warblers. Also new to the park today were Blue Grosbeaks (2) and Catbirds (>5).
We also saw an Oriole that we could not identify. It was too large for
an Orchard, had an all black full head wrap, and dull yellow (not orange)
everywhere but the wings and back, which were a dull grayish-green. There
appeared to be a little slightly rusty part below the lower front of the
black bib (part of the head wrap). Any thoughts on this would be
appreciated. My current best guess is a Baltimore molting into breeding
plumage in his second year. I didnt know whether they would molt this late
or be this yellow.
