VA Birders,
Our best bird at Fort C.F. Smith Park, Arlington, today--John Fox &
Lannie Graham saw it with me--was a fall-plumaged BAY-BREASTED WARBLER. The
bird
came and landed on a bare stick in the grassy area in the middle of the Bird
Stream, and actually stayed there long enough for us to observe its field
marks.
These included dark/black legs, wing bars, and tail spots, and an unstreaked
buffy breast. (The dark legs immediately eliminated Blackpoll, since the
Blackpoll does not have black legs; its legs are yellow or straw-colored.)
Other
birds worth noting were a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, BROWN THRASHER, MAGNOLIA
and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, AM. REDSTART, AND COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
