On January 11, 2003, during our regular monthly bird walk, 15 observers saw 42
species at the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve (www.bansheereeks.org) and the
nearby Dulles Wetlands. The temperature was in the low 20's and windy when we
began & while it warmed up a bit, it didn't warm up much and the wind didn't
quit at all.
Because there were 15 of us we split into two dif. groups, one led by John
Drummond and the other by me. A lot of good birders participated & assisted.
The most int'g birds were a single Raven, two Sharp-shinned Hawks, a single
Red-headed Woodpecker (which made it a seven-woodpecker day) and 2 Brown
Creepers.
Banshee Reeks plans to open to the general public the third weekend of every
month beginning the third weekend in March. This will be done by utilizing
volunteers - if you think you might be int'd please let me know & I will send
you more information on the first training session, scheduled for February 15.
