Greetings to all:
Yesterday with the bitter cold and wind, the Banister River WMA Christmas Bird
Count was completed.
I don't have all of the counts in yet, but we did manage to find a few birds of
interest.
I found an adult Bald Eagle at Staunton River State Park and an immature of all
places at the Banister River WMA as it flew over the very center of the count
circle at 1500 hrs.
During my two hours of owling, I managed to turn up 5 Screech-owls. However,
the GH and Barred Owls were quite all day.
Adam D'Onofrio found a Merlin at Staunton River State Park which was the first
for the count. He was very close to the bird. Sin of all sins, he left his
camera at home. He will be SHOT later for that.
Grace McCrowell has not reported her totals yet but she did email me to let me
know that she did relocate the American Pipits that we found nearly 2 weeks ago.
There were no ducks at Staunton River SP except for a lone Bufflehead seen by
Adam. I did find a single Ruddy Duck, some Mallards and Hooded Mergansers on
some ponds and Wood Ducks in the Banister River.
Two Pied-billed Grebes were located, one in a pond and the other in Banister
River.
I will post a total report when I can.
