Hi,
Thank you Val for posting about the Band-rumped Storm-Petrel that was at
Hunting Creek on Sep. 19.
The bird we saw, on the water and in flight as close as about 75 feet from
us on the stone bridge, showed no foot projection beyond the tail while
flying, had a slight notch in the tail, no white undertail coverts, and a
non-fluttery flight style. The wings were broad out into the primaries; the
general body color of the sitting bird in the cloudy late-afternoon
conditions was a grayish-brown and the folded wings distinctly protruded
beyond the tail-tip. The white uppertail covert patch was fairly even in
width. I wrote notes at the car before we left.
I talked with Kurt Gaskill on Saturday and this bird was different than the
one he called me about at about 3 pm that afternoon.
Best,
Rob Hilton
