Hi all, Today was a moderately busy day at the station. We handled over 50
birds which was
a drop in the bucket compared to the activity up in the trees. Our best
bird of the morning
was our FOY SWAINSON'S THRUSH. A close second was a re-capture COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT that
we banded in 2002 as an after second year. That makes him at least 8 yrs
old. It's amazing
to think of that little scrap of a thing chugging back and forth all these
years. Also
very pleasing were a pair (Mr. and Mrs.)of ORCHARD ORIOLES. We banded the
female in 2005 as an
after hatch year, making her at least 5 yrs old. We banded our FOY AM.
REDSTART today.
Other warblers banded include: NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER,
PALM WARBLER
and OVENBIRD. The Common Yellowthroats are really pouring through right
now, still mostly
the males. So far this year we have banded record numbers of CATBIRDS,
EASTERN TOWHEES,
and SWAMP SPARROWS. The number of Catbirds around the station is mind
boggling. They seem
to be in every bush and tree. Our Turkeys and Bob Whites serenaded us this
morning and the
Great Horned Owl did a nice fly-by. Fortunately the Oak flowers seem to be
about over with,
for which we are very grateful. It surely is tedious picking that stuff out
of the nets.
