Annandale, Va. (Fairfax County) just got power back on this morning. When not
cleaning up the tree branch that fell and hit the car (no damage!) I spent most
of the time trying to observe storm tossed birds that might come to the yard
for refuge. An Ovenbird showed up on Thursday, foraged briefly, and then
hunkered down in the wild grape for shelter, soon followed by a Tennessee and
Black-throated Green that perched together underneath the downspout against the
side of the house for protection against the growing wind. Both survived the
night and were still there Friday morning. Sadly, an American Redstart was not
so lucky. I found its body this afternoon while finishing up the clean up. It
apparently hit the side of the house. However, there is also good news! A
Hatch Year Connecticut Warbler (wash on the upper breast) not only survived the
storm, but was busily foraging in the debris along a small path in the wooded
area in the backyard about 5:00 PM today. What an eventful first migration for
this bird! I'm glad it passed its first test!
