Adam D'Onofrio and I birded Back Bay NWR, Princess Anne WMA, CBBT, and the
lower Eastern Shore 10/23. Despite the strong north-northeast winds, we had a
great day.
Best around the Back Bay area included 1 imm. COMMON MOORHEN (#317 for the
year), 10 SNOW GEESE, and a VESPER SPARROW along the west side of "D" Pool as
well as 6 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS on the beach and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW at
Back Bay NWR and a SORA calling at the Whitehurst Tract.
On the CBBT, we had MARSH WREN, SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED , SPARROW,SONG SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, CHIPPING
SPARROW,DARK-EYED JUNCO, SWAMP SPARROW, NORTHERN FLICKER, and RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRD.
At the Easternshore NWR, we walked the Butterfly Trail where we had a nice
variety of sparrows including a beautiful CLAY-COLORED SPARROW.
At the marsh at the end of Magotha Road, we had 2 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED
SPARROWS, CLAPPER RAILS, and a GREAT HORNED OWL.
We had 11 sparrow species for the day, unfortunately we did not see any lark
Sparrows (this bird continues to elude both of us-would be a lifer for Adam and
a Big Year bird for me). Maybe next time we'll get that one too!
Good Birding,
