Shenandoah NP / 10 AM / Near South River Waterfalls:
I was trying to track down a singing Winter Wren. While waiting for him to move
and reveal himself, I happened to catch a glimpse of
a female Canada Warbler carrying food. Without noticing me, she flew right over
to the nest and began feeding a single 1/2-grown
fledgling.
After watching the youngster for a bit, I saw that he was sitting on a branch
about 6" above the nest. Apparently, he was the lone
nestling. I watched the female bring food 3 times before I went up-creek to
follow the Wren.
The only other birds of note (at least to me) was a single Junco and 2
Broad-winged Hawks in the woods. Most of the expected species
were there except that I never found the Blackburnian I was really looking for.
I also had gone up there for Veery. Now I've had my
fill of them for life!
