Hi birders,
Well Jen Folts and I hit the jackpot this morning. And how! About 7:00 this
morning we saw a BLACK RAIL
off the boardwalk, left hand side, just beyond the circle (on the way to the
tower). We both saw it briefly (of course), Jen 4 times and I once. Boy
those
little legs can move! We were surprised and delighted, to say the least. Boy
are they round, tailless and cute - Jen's first sighting, so it was extra
special.
In the process of trying, unsuccessfully, to relocate the Black Rail, we came
across a VIRGINIA RAIL for a moment, foraging in the same general area.
And to top off our Huntley morning someone had relocated the SORA, which
we dutifully (?) checked out. Wow!
Of course you can't have everything. We went to see if we could find the
American
Bittern. No luck there, but can't really complain!
Off we went to a very brief visit to Leesylvania, hanging our heads out the
window like
a pair of old hounds, and sure enough we heard the KING RAIL! Ain't nothing
wrong
with a 4-rail day! By the time we got to Lesylvania bird song
had pretty much died down but we did have a first of the year for us, AMERICAN
REDSTART. A little gem, he was.
Then we hied on down to Possum Point Rd and were too late for much of
anything,
though we did tick off B&W Warbler, WE Vireo and N. Parula. 'Twas very
quiet, but did not complain! (We were told that Possum Point-Cockpit area was
jumping with new arrivals this morning, including Prothonotary & Worm-eating
Warblers, so they're not only coming, but they're here!
