Locations: Craney Island (Portsmouth) -- Hog Island ( Surry County)
Hi all....
Several groups of birders shared sightings at Craney Island yesterday.
Highlights included: 21+ American Avocets, Black-necked Stilt, (2)
Wilson's Phalaropes, (1) Red-necked Phalarope, nice assortment of peeps,
plovers, terns, etc.
Hog Island: The American White Pelican and at least (2) Upland
Sandpipers are still present. Both species were observed from the
observation platform on the left side of the road. Look back across the
road in the fields for the Uplands... and past the fields to the long
pond for the pelican. Unfortunately, the refuge has now posted "do not
enter" signs to keep everyone off of the dirt cross roads and out of the
fields. So, you now have to stay on the main road and use the platform to
scan for the birds. (Reminder: vehicle security checks are required to
enter the refuge.)
