Encouraged by various reports of a sparrow fall out last weekend, I was
eager to get out this weekend to see what species might be hanging around.
Nancy and I went out Saturday in the Stuart's Draft area and Jim Reed and I
went out Sunday to some of the same sites as well as others. Birds were
plentiful and active both days. The most numerous sparrow by far was the
White-crowned which were surprisingly vocal and were encountered in many
locations and at all times of the day. My count estimates of White-crowned
Sparrow are as follows:
Hall School Rd (Rt. 639) -- 60
Lipscomb Rd (Rt. 635) --15
Quillans -- 15
Stuarts Draft Sewage Treatmant Plant -- 25
South River Preserve (Nature Conservancy Property) -- 45
Guthrie Road -- 10
Christians Creek Road -- 20
Other sparrows seen were:
Eastern Towhee (610 on Blue Ridge)
Field Sparrow (perhaps 50+ on Sunday at various sites)
Chipping Sparrow (multiple small groups)
Savannah (maybe 15-20 total)
Vesper Sparrow (2 on Saturday on Hall School Rd)
White-throated Sparrow (many, but not nearly as many as White-crowned; also
singing)
Song Sparrow (usually individuals or small groups at most sites)
Swamp Sparrow (1 on Sat on Lipscomb Rd; 5 or 6 on Sunday at SRP)
Lincoln's Sparrow (1 on Sat on Lipscomb Rd)
Dark-eyed Junco (several flocks on 610 and BRP up on the mountain)
Other birds of interest
Greater Yellowlegs (1 at Quillans)
Both Kinglets
Palm Warblers (at least 6 on Sunday, mostle yellow Eastern race birds)
Blue Headed Vireo (1 at SRP)
Northern Harrier (2 juveniles along Hall School Rd)
The maples, tulip trees and dogwoods provided for a colorful backdrop to
some pretty good birding.
