I hit Daingerfield Island and Gravelly Point on the Virginia side of the
Potomac this morning.
At Daingerfield there were three White-winged Scoters resting with some scaup
15-20 yards off of the piers by the boat lifts.
At Gravelly (no Snowy owls, before you ask) there was a small opening in the
ice just a few yards inside of the inlet that runs between the point
and DCA. One, possibly two, White-winged Scoters were there with a raft of
45-50 Redheads.
I always thought that while the Potomac is entirely within MD and DC, that the
coves and bays along the river were officially VA.
One map I was looking at showed that this is not the case with the inlets north
and south of the airport.
I marked these birds as being in Virginia on eBird, but they may have actually
been in DC.
If anyone can direct me to an official description of where the border is at
that point on the river, I would appreciate it.
