With the Washington DC area dealing with the remnants of Frances
today (heavy rain and strong winds) I didn't think I would be able to watch
this evening at my site (Van Dyke Park, Fairfax City), but by the time I
started (1945) the rain had stopped and the wind at ground level was only
moderate. This a strong wind higher coming out of the east.
Much to my surprise I had a decent flight of Common Nighthawks- a
group of 25 heading south at 1808 and near the end of the watch(1920) a
group of 16 materialized overhead on their way south. Also had 5 other
birds for a total of 46.
My expectation is that there should be a good
flight either Thursday or Friday.
