Gerry Hawkins, Nick Nichols, and John and Steve Small joined me today for
the Annandale portion of the DC CBC today. Although historically not as
birdy as some areas along the Potomac, we were pleasantly surprised.
Perhaps the best bird of the day was a Merlin perched along Holmes Run west
of Sleepy Hollow Road. We also found a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker along Holmes
Run, 4 male Eastern Towhees foraging together at Mason District Park, and a
Winter Wren practically in my back yard. I got back from trying to locate
the crows roost (it seems to shift so often). I ran into Bill Hohenstein at
Green Spring Gardens during a decent rain and he reported no evidence of a
roost in Annandale. I found it along Beauregard Street north of Seminary
Lane with about 3,000 birds. More may have been coming in when I left. Here
are today's total if there is any interest. Totals include birds reported by
two feeder watchers.
