At lunchtime today (4/8/02) there were two Anhingas at Stumpy Lake in
Virginia Beach. First, an adult male bird was engaged in high speed soaring
above the lake, making a circular route about a quarter of a mile in
diameter. He was acting like it was really important to get around the
circuit quickly, flapping vigorously every once in a while to boost his
speed. After five or six laps around the west end of the lake (looking to
your right from the causeway as you enter Stumpy Lake), he was joined by a
female for a couple of trips. They both then descended and landed high up
in separate cypress trees about 50 feet apart. This is my first Anhinga
sighting at Stumpy since last fall, and the first time I've been lucky
enough to see two together. Perhaps before too long I'll get to see some
"Anhinglets?"
