On Saturday (March 1) I took a tour around Virginia Beach and turned up a
few good birds. First, there was an American White Pelican at Back Bay NWR.
It was in the bay behind the visitor center sitting on the shore beneath the
Osprey nest platform (which was, appropriately, visited by an Osprey). Also
at Back Bay were several Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Common and Red-throated
Loons very close to shore, and an Orange-crowned Warbler in the shrubs. I
next went over to Christopher Farms to look for the Eurasian Wigeon that has
been seen there the last two winters. Sure enough, it was there in the lake
along with a few American Wigeon. On my way back home I stopped at Mount
Trashmore where I found two Red-necked Grebes in the middle of the lake.
Looks like the big snow storm has really sent a lot of those guys down
south.
This morning (March 3) I stopped by Craney Island and found a Eurasian
Wigeon along the west side, near the north end where the concrete ballast
blocks line the shore. After checking my e-mail this morning, I see that
Ben Copeland found the same bird over the weekend. The roads along the west
side aren't too bad, but if you drive along the east side your vehicle will
definitely need a bath when you're done.
