I observed the pelican from about 12:15 to 12:45 pm today. Initially, it was
resting in shallow water. From there, it flew south about two hundred yards,
then began trolling along the eastern shore, eventually passing within about 30
yards of my position near the Ft. Belvoir outdoor archery range.
Also observed: about 20 Tundra Swans, many Lesser Scaup and Canada Geese, a
few Buffleheads and Ruddy Ducks, an assortment of gulls and crows, a few
cardinals, juncos, and starlings, and two Bald Eagles (one more-or-less mature,
one immature).
