All,
This morning I met Laura Catterton at the sod farms on Bristow Road, 2
miles south of Rt. 28 in Prince William County. The good news is that
the American Golden-Plovers are still there. The bad news is that the
sod farm now says they don't want people on their property. Laura asked
permission yesterday but apparently the person who authorized her wasn't
allowed to give such authorization. Today we were politely asked to
leave by the manager. You can still scan the area where they are
pulling up sod from Split Oak Lane but it is not nearly as close a
view. This morning the birds were in the grass just on the north side
of where they were pulling up sod. When spooked they flew onto the bare
ground where the sod was gone. We also found many Killdeer and
Starlings making a meal from the bugs. Scanning the plowed field along
Bristow turned up many Mourning Doves, Killdeer, a few Horned Larks and
Meadowlarks but not the hoped for Buff-breasted Sandpiper. We'll just
have to keep looking.
