This morning I found two Am. Golden Plovers amongst the Killdeer at the
Centreville Sod Farm in Bristow (near Nokesville). The sod farm is along
Bristow
Rd. (Rt. 619), about two miles south of Rt. 28. Look for the big red pickup
truck loaded with firewood parked on the left side of Bristow Rd. Turn left
here,
onto Split Oak Lane, and then make an immediate right onto the red dirt road.
Drive all the way back down into the area where they're pulling up sod. I
asked permission from one of the fork lift operators and he said fine. Don't
know
if he had the authority to give permission, but he approached me and asked if
he could help me. The office is on the other side of Bristow Rd., just south
of Split Oak Lane. Both plovers still retained some black splotches on the
underparts. The brownish-gray underwings, lacking the black axillaries of the
Black-bellied Plover, and the dark, finely barred tail and rump instead of the
white tail of the Black-bellied Plover pointed to Am. Golden Plover. Both birds
still had a hint of gold speckling on the upperparts.
