I had a very cooperative AMERICAN BITTERN at Occoquan NWR this morning. It
flew into the
wetlands on Charlie Road (right hand side if you are coming from the parking
lot) at about 8:30 and then posed out in the open. It was still there when
I left about 9:00. Since it was
raining pretty steadily this morning we did not open the banding station at
Occoquan. After
consoling ourselves at Dunkin Donuts we went back to the refuge to go
birding when the rain
slackened. The KING RAILS on Easy Road put on a good show for us. Other
fine birds
included a pair of NORTHERN HARRIERS, BALD EAGLES, BLUE-GREY GNATCATHER,
YELLOW PALM WARBLER,
and VESPER SPARROW.
