There was low-level activity at Monticello Park in Alexandria in the
morning. Suddenly, around noon, the sun came out and the warblers descended
and began feasting on a termite cache ain a snag near the stream at
Monticello Park.
Four juvenile American redstarts squabbled among each other; a pair of
cedar waxwing made the most adorable portrait feeding each other in full
view; a male and female Northern Parula flitted in the trees, male and
female scarlet tanagers brought forth oohs and aahs, there were
black-throated blues, Eastern Peewees, and then three red-shouldered hawks
got into the mix and flew overhead screaming loudly. Several wood thrushes
provided the background music, along with a very loud White-breasted
nuthatch.
As if that wasn't enough, a downy woodpecker showed off its acrobatics like
a warbler.
I've probably missed a few.
The Merlin app also noted the presence of Great Crested Flycatchers,
Red-Eyed Vireo and Chimney Swift, although the last could've been a mimic.
Tom Albright was there keeping count and can provide a much better tally.
This may be the last great week of the migration so get out there, if you
can.
