Two years ago the discovery of a well-established Great Blue Heron Rookery
to the birding community was documented as first record for Albemarle County.
Situated on a 100-acre parcel that was up for sale, I'm happy to report the
land was purchased by a couple who are very protective of the rookery and
surrounding habitat. I have received permission to continue monitoring
nesting and breeding activity and plan to post to web site.
My first visit was today where I discovered three trees with at least 40
"occupied" nests and over 50 birds. Below is link to web page for few
pictures. I will attempt to monitor on a weekly basis until the young fledge.
