My first visit to Accotink Bay NWR was successful. I mainly birded along
Beaver Trail and the Accotink Creek Trail. The latter was rather overgrown,
wet, muddy and slippery. But the walk to the observation platform was worth
it. Many ducks were present, including: Mallard, Am Black, N Shoveler,
Green-winged, N Pintail (one male), and wood duck. I was delighted to see an
American Bittern. Yellow-rumped warblers and White-throated sparrows were
all over the place. A few Eastern Bluebirds and Hermit Thrush certainly
added to today's variety. Total tally for the morning was some 40+ species
(see below). :)
