Dorothy Tella, Gladys Millington and I took part in the Northern Virginia
Bird Club outing to Accotink Bay NWR today. The highlight was a lone female
Common Goldeneye. A total of 29 species were identified; list follows.
Things got off to in inauspicious start as I spent well over an hour going
thru security to get onto the military base. Later I learned that I didnt
have to get onto the base to access the refuge, but I was prepared to be a
birding army of one. I found the ladies further in the refuge, though, and
then we found a few good birds. (The few, the proud, the birders.) I
apologize to anyone who showed up and didnt find a group to bird with. I do
recommend Accotink to anyone in the area. There are plenty of wooded trails,
large mud flats, at low tide, and lots of shoreline to look for waterfowl. I
hope to return in the spring to look for migrants.
Good birding!
