Hi birders,
Jen Folts and I did a bit of birding today, going first to Leeyslvania Park
(Prince
William County), then on to Possum Pt./Cockpit Rds (also Pr. Wm County)
and, finally, to Monticello Park in Alexandria.
We had some really GOOD birds today.At Leesylvania we found on the entrance
road before the "toll booth" a beautiful SUMMER TANAGER; other birds of note
at this spot were ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO
and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, plus both ORIOLES
and the usual suspects, resident and breeding.
At Possum Point/Cockpit Rds we found BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, ACADIAN
FLYCATCHER and INDIGO BUNTINGS (at least 3 singing males including an
immature), plus several WORM-EATING WARBLERS, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, YELLOW
WARBLER, YELLOW-THROATED and the best of
all great looks at YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO. This was from about 15 feet
away, eye level, and we could see the entire bird (!) as it was out in the
open, looking at us as we looked at him. Great! Again, usual suspects
which included PRAIRIE, BLACK AND WHITE WARBLERS,SCARLET TANAGERS
and HOODED WARBLER.
Monticello had sparse birds, both in numbers of species and of individuals
(except
of course, the ubiquitous Yellow-rempeds). However NASHVILLE, HOODED,
BLACK AND WHITE AND BLACKPOLL all made themselves known, as well
as good visuals of both genders of ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS.
This is another weird migration! Numbers are low; we've had to work hard
to get the birds we have seen/heard. All species of warbler are not yet
represented up here in No. Va., but Blackpolls are a bit de trop so early.
I certainly hope more birds come; every year I worry more about the lower
numbers of just about all species that I come across in my travels.
