Good morning,
We spent a pleasant couple of hours at Sunrise Valley Park this morning. On the
non-birding side, either the builder of the next door office park or the land
owner who still controls the property that includes the park, did some
unsolicited mowing. Reston Association staff are attempting to contact the
responsible party and ask that no more mowing be done this year. Also, the path
on the NE side of the pond has been extended to the edge of the forest. This
was done by putting down a layer of wood chips.
On the birding side: The big plus for the morning was the arrival of a Great
Egret. When we left around 9:30 it was still fishing in the pond. Other treats
were a Kingfisher flying all around the pond and two immature Orchard Orioles
(possibly a female and one immature) in the maple trees west of the pond.
The recent rains raised the water level, and we did not see any shorebirds.
