Hey there VAbirders,
This morning we were off to the Smithsonian Museum of American History
where daughter Rachel at her spinning wheel was part of a demonstration for
Women's history month. As we were getting ready to leave the house I heard
a beautiful sound from above...there, not very high, were 26 Tundra Swans
flying north. A new flyover bird for our yard! I frantically fumbled for
my knapsack, already packed in the trunk, to dig out my nox for a better
look. Fantastic!
After Rachel was settled in at the museum, my husband and I took a walk
down to the Tidal Basin. On the way there, near where they are building
the World War II monument, I saw a Red-tailed Hawk sunning itself high in a
tree. The Basin was about half ice, half open water. There were Geese and
gulls of course (including some bickering Great Black-backed gulls), a
Scaup, a pair of Mallards, and about 10-15 Red-breasted Mergansers. About
200 Canada Geese flew north, fairly high up. But the bird I was looking
for??? Red-necked Grebe, but of course. And I found them, 3 of them.
Nice for a non-birding jaunt. Bright sunshine sure felt good too!
