VA-Birders,
Not a great amount of activity today in the few spots I was able to visit.
Possum Point had some migrants including BG GNATCATCHERS (2), YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLERS (4), a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, and a few singing PINE WARBLERS. Other
birds there included a couple RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and two vocal BARRED OWLS up on
Cockpit Point Rd.
I found the reported WHITE-EYED VIREO at Julie Metz Wetlands, and the nearby
marina had 13 FORSTER'S TERNS.
Occoquan Bay NWR held a NORTHERN BOBWHITE, and like most other spots today,
many TREE SWALLOWS. Another birder reported seeing the SANDHILL CRANE at 7 AM
flying over the parking lot toward the north, which has been seen off-and-on
since Wednesday. I scanned the area for the bird, even driving through the
neighborhoods to the north of the refuge to get a look at the golf course from
various vantage points, and I could not find the bird. The bird is probably
feeding in some nearby fields, so a thorough area search might be successful at
finding it for anyone who has the time.
