On arrival at Leesylvania SP at dawn, a flock of 10-12 Common Nighthawks were
flying over the parking lot heading west. Other highlights were a female
Wilson's Warbler at the Fairfax House ruin, numerous Blackpoll Warblers on the
ridge above, two Northern Waterthrushes and a pair of mating Prothonotary
Warblers on the Bushy Point trail, and another flock (or maybe the same as
earlier) of 11 C. Nighthawks at about 11:15 flying west near the Powell's Creek
trailhead, as I stopped to look for the Olive-sided Flycatcher. Fortunately for
me Kurt Gaskill happened by and suggested where it might be found. We found it
on a snag down by the lower beaver pond. Not much happening at Julie Metz at
noon, except for a Green Heron perched 40-50 feet at the top of a dead tree

At Occoquan Bay after lunch, the Blackpoll Warblers (20-30 seen) outnumbered
the Yellow Warblers. Most were spread out along Deep Hole Point Road between
Fox and Easy Rds., but were also seen near Painted Turtle Pond. Also, heard
three different N. Bobwhite saying their name. Found a half-dozen Warbling
Vireos on Easy Rd., mostly out at Deep Hole Point. The final bird of the day
was a Yellow-breasted Chat to bring my warbler tally to 16 spp., and 87 spp.
for the day.
