Greetings VA Birders,
Barbara Houston, Jim Hansen, and I traveled to the Eastern Shore yesterday —
specifically to look for Snowy Owls at Chincoteague. The total was a big ZERO!
Arghhh!
Barbara and Jim were looking for photo opportunities and I was looking to pad
my year list.
Below is the list from Chincoteague NWR where we spent a good bit of the
morning along the beach access road and the beach down to the hook.
Surprises included Marbled Godwits in Tom’s Cove (not mentioned on Joelle
Buffa’s report last week) and lone female Long-tailed Duck in the canal along
the beach road.
We came back by Willis Wharf and again the Marbled Godwits were stunning —
about 130 on the mudflats at low tide about 3 pm
We then stopped by Lake Foster near Cape Charles and counted 14 Redhead ducks
and a pair of Wood Ducks plus the usual suspects.
Final stop of the day at CBBT island 1 yielded one single Purple Sandpiper plus
hundreds of Ring-billed Gulls, Northern Gannets flying around and floating on
the water.
A great day to be birding on the shore! My year list for VA is now at 102!
