VA Birders,
When I looked out my back windows about 10:00 am this morning, in
addition to the usual House Finches and Am. Goldfinches, I saw a female Purple
Finch
on my birdbath, and then, very shortly thereafter, 2 Pine Siskins came to my
feeders. Neither the Purple Finch nor the Pine Siskins stayed very long, and
after they flew off I did not see them again. Since I will be working as an
Election Officer at my local polling place here in Arlington Co. from before
dawn until well after dark tomorrow, I will not be able to check my feeders
again
until Wednesday, but I'll keep you posted if I see these birds again. This
is the first time in several years I have had Pine Siskins in my yard, but 25
or 30 years ago we used to have them every winter, and we usually had Evening
Grosbeaks as well!
About midday, I went over to Fort C. F. Smith Park here in Arlington for
a couple of hours; the only finches I saw there were Am. Goldfinches at a
feeder across the street from the park. My best birds at Fort Smith were 3
adult
Bald Eagles, all circling in the sky over the meadow together about 12:00 or
12:30 pm. Also of interest was a flock of 30 of more crows, all of which
seemed to be Fish Crows. Several of them were calling, and I didn't hear any
Am.
Crows in the flock, altho I had heard and seen a few Am. Crows earlier. I
think this must be the biggest flock of Fish Crows I can recall seeing together
at
one time.
