VA Birders,
This evening 35 Northern Cardinals showed up at our feeders here on Compton Mt
in Buchanan County. There were 17 males and 18 females. That was surprising
because the males usually outnumber the females. 35 was a new high number for
our yard. We had a new high number of 28 just a couple of weeks ago. It looked
today as if we had decorated our trees and shrubs in red, appropriate for the
season.
One lone Pine Siskin showed up among the 20 or so goldfinches this morning. It
was still at the thistle seed sock this evening. That's the first one to show
up for a couple of weeks.
I found a dead Ruffed Grouse in my yard today. It had flown against the window
of an outbuilding. Oddly enough it is a rather small window. The bird looked to
be a large healthy specimen up to that point. Grouse used to be a common site
here on the mountain, but since a good portion of the mountain has gone from
overgrown fields to tall trees, we don't see as many.
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
