Jeff's post reminds me... Over the last several years here in Arlington VA I
noticed what seemed an extraordinary crash in numbers of our regular Carolina
Chickadee and Tufted Titmouse. Like others, I speculated that West Nile
Virus was to blame. This year I have noted what seems like a significant
recovery
in their numbers, especially in late summer and now into the fall. This
suggests good breeding success or more filtering into the area from elsewhere,
or
both. I'm encouraged. For about three years it was sad rarely to hear the
familiar notes of both birds that had been so common; now once again I am
hearing and seeing my old friends much more often. Cheers,
