      Technical Highlights (partial list)
a.. The bzip command for file compression has been added.
b.. The pax command can read and write files compressed using bzip.
c.. The sear command which takes a list of files creates a windows
executable that when run will create these files.
d.. The #! line for shell scripts allows the interpreter itself to
be a script rather than just an executable.
e.. The device files /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1 have been added for
playing audio files.
f.. The algorithm for mapping Windows process identifiers to UNIX
process identifiers has changed for Windows NT/2K/XP so that the UNIX
process ids will not be reused for at least 32 processes.
g.. The shell has been updated to the most recent version of ksh93
which has a number of fixes and new features.
h.. The -D option to the cat command which causes a carriage return
to be inserted before each new-line now works when standard output is a
pipe.
i.. The ls command now handes multibyte locales when deciding on
whether a file name is printable or not.
j.. A -b option has been added to grep to highlight matched text.
k.. An Administrator can now use kill to terminate processes that it
doesn't own at least in some cases.
l.. The /etc/profile now checks for the existence of a file named
/var/etc/localprofile to that installations can make local changes without
having to change the version that is shipped.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

a.. The pthread library, pthread.dll, has been added to support
POSIX tread applications. In addition several changes to posix.dll have been
made to support multithread applications.
b.. The -G option of the ld command for building dynamically linked
libraries can now accept a file of the form name.ign which contains the
symbols that should not be exported. It will generate and use the file
name.def in which all other extern symbols will be exported.
c.. The signal numbers 3 and 21 were reverse in <signal.h> so that
SIGQUIT will have the value (3) found on most UNIX systems.
d.. The <sys/resource.h> header is more complete so that programs
that use it should compile.
e.. The wide character functions have been added to the stdio
library.
f.. The standard output of native commands should now go to the pty
by default when run over a telnet session. Previously, this only worked in
some instances.
g.. The code for ptys was modified so that the pty would not be
closed if the process that created it exits and other processes have it
open.
h.. The lex command was modified to handle larger lex files without
running out of resources.
        i.. The functions asctime_r(), ctime_r(), fdatasync(), fseeko(),
ftello(), getcontext(), gmtime_r(), makecontext(), mbrtowc(),
sigtimedwait(), sigwait(), sigwaitinfo(), strtold(), strsep(), swapcontext()
and wcrtomb() have been added.
j.. The kill() function has been changed so that if a signal is sent
to the group that the process belongs to, the signal will be sent to the
other members before sending the signal to itself.
k.. The chdir(), and readdir(), functions now allow a user with
adminstrator privilege to work even when they otherwise would not have
permission.
l.. The SIGURG signal should now work with sockets.
m.. The proto command now takes a -e option and adds code to headers
to handle __declspec(dllimport) for data symbols defined in a dynamically
linked library.
