I saw this article today. It is shameful that more than 10% of our population
has no health insurance. Ideally, I would like to see Medicare for All
instituted today, even though I realize it is not currently politically
feasible. What may be feasible is a migration toward MFA. The current
unemployment crisis has cost many people their jobs and their employment-based
health care. Many people have never had coverage. Problems provide
opportunities.
The current situation is bad for the public, for medical providers and for
hospitals. We can encourage migration by making it easy to sign up for
Medicare or Medicaid with the stipulation that, once they are on, they commit
to staying on. Any other insurance, including employer-based coverage, becomes
a secondary provider. This approach provides a stable and growing base for
public coverage and, at the same time, does not abruptly disrupt the system.
The Medicare system is a model of efficient, relatively inexpensive,
administration and should be expanded.
The current system is unsatisfactory to many people and should be changed.
