| On June 24, the moratorium on all electric, gas, water, telephone,
broadband, and cable shut-offs ended. This allowed utility companies to begin
terminating service to customers behind on their bills starting this week.
- You are eligible for 180 days of additional protection from shutoffs, but
you must inform your utility immediately that your financial circumstances have
been changed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Call your utility to Self Certify!
- If the utility refuses to honor a request to self certify, call the NY
Department of Public Service's complaint line at 1-800-342-3377 and request
they order the utility to honor the grace period and issue an affordable
deferred payment agreement.

| Federal Programs Provide Assistance During COVID-19Throughout the COVID-19
pandemic, the federal government has provided a range of programs to support
individuals, families, and communities:
- The Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) is a temporary Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) program to help families and households
struggling to afford internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic by providing
discounts on service and devices.
- The Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) program from the Department of the
Treasury assists families that are unable to pay rent or utilities so they can
remain in their homes during the pandemic.
- The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) from the
Administration for Children and Families (ACF) provides federally funded
assistance to cover home energy bills, energy crises, weatherization, and
energy-related minor home repairs to eligible households.
- The Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) from ACF is a
new emergency program that provides funds to low-income households for water
and wastewater bills, helps avoid water shut offs, and supports water system
reconnections caused by missed payments during the pandemic.
- The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides monthly benefits that help families
purchase healthy food from authorized retail food stores.

| Governor Signs Seawright Legislation Limiting Lender Annual Fees
July 1, 2021: Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law Assemblymember Rebecca
Seawright's legislation to limit the annual fees lenders can charge for credit
cards, home-equity loans, and other forms of revolving credit.

| Drug Diversion Fraud: When you pick up a prescription for yourself or a
loved one, make sure to count your pills when you get home. If you are shorted
pills, it could be an accident or it could be something more. To report
possible drug diversion fraud, contact the NYS Senior Medicare Patrol at

The IRS announces ‘Dirty Dozen’ tax scams for 2021
The Internal Revenue Service began its "Dirty Dozen" list for 2021 with a
warning for taxpayers, tax professionals and financial institutions to be on

| A MESSAGE FROM STATEWIDE'S PRESIDENT, MARIO C. HENRY There is important
legislation before the state government and I urge you to call your elected
representatives in support. Senate Bill S 4603 and Assembly Bill A 5422 calls
for the expansion of EPIC, a program that helps keep prescription drug co-pays
affordable.
- The bill keeps the application a simple process,
- ensures that a cost of living benefit change does not throw someone off
the program, and
- allows Medicare enrollees under age 65 to apply.
This is legislation StateWide wrote after hearing about problems on our Help
Line. We should all remember the EPIC program was created by StateWide's
advocacy efforts.
I would like you to call your State Senators at 518-455-2800 and Assembly
members at 518-455-4100 and ask them to support the legislation by
co-sponsoring the legislation. |
